From the outside tires may seem tough, however in reality they are quite delicate and can be easily damaged by their environment. Some of the typical storage areas in a house, such as the furnace room, are not suitable for storing tires.
According to major tire manufacturers, these are the correct procedures for storing your tires:
- Don't store near ozone sources (e.g. furnace, central vac, sump pump, etc.). Ozone is a colourless gas with an acrid odour and is emitted by AC electric motors that use brush contacts. It can prematurely age tires by causing the rubber to dry out and crack over time.
- Don't allow tires to become frozen while not mounted on the vehicle. The precludes storing them outdoors or in unheated garages, attics, barns, etc.
- Don't store near or in contact with petroleum-based substances, such as oils, fuels or asphalt.
- Do store in upright position. If tires must be stored horizontally, do not stack higher than 1 metre (about 3.3 ft.).
- If storing tires already mounted on wheels, deflate to 50% normal pressure and leave valve caps in place.
- If tires have white sidewalls, store them with the white sides facing eachother to avoid staining from contact with the black rubber sides.
